- Estimated Workload: Approximately 10–15 hours per month during peak production periods and 3–5 hours per month during slower periods. Workload will vary based on project schedules.

Overview
Connecting for Kids (CFK) is seeking a detail-oriented copyeditor/proofreader with demonstrated professional experience to support fundraising communications and program marketing efforts. The copyeditor/proofreader will copyedit early-stage drafts before design and proofread final designed materials before publication or production.
Essential Duties
- Review early-stage drafts for grammar, structure, word choice, consistency and correctness. Fact-check dates, names, locations and times against project checklists. Make recommendations for content and clarity, as needed.
- Review content for alignment with CFK’s voice, internal style guide, AP style and plain-language standards.
- Identify unclear, incomplete, inconsistent or potentially misleading content.
- Check consistency across related materials, such as the event page, flier, email and social posts.
- Preserve the author’s intended meaning and flag substantial revisions for approval rather than rewriting without direction.
- Review materials in their final format for errors introduced during design, including missing text, incorrect line breaks, duplicated content and formatting inconsistencies.
- Communicate project status clearly and complete projects according to project timelines.
- Provide feedback in a timely, professional manner, using tracked changes (Microsoft) or suggestions and comments (Google Docs).
- Maintain confidentiality when working with draft fundraising, program or organizational information.
- Participate in initial onboarding and occasional check-ins as needed.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or a related field, or equivalent professional copyediting and proofreading experience.
- Solid foundation in English grammar and editing practices.
- Strong attention to detail and comfort with research and fact-checking to confirm content accuracy.
- Ability to clearly communicate changes and provide constructive feedback.
- Experience applying industry-standard style guides (preference for AP style) as well as internal style conventions.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace, Microsoft Word and PDF commenting or markup tools, as well as comfort reviewing website content.
Expectations
- Turnaround times vary but are typically within two days of receiving copy.
- Meetings and onboarding are considered billable hours.
- The copyeditor/proofreader must maintain accurate time logs and submit invoices up to twice monthly.
- The copyeditor/proofreader will flag factual, strategic or substantive content concerns, but final content decisions remain with Connecting for Kids.
- This role requires independent editorial review and human judgment. The copyeditor/proofreader may use standard spelling, grammar and document-markup tools but may not upload, paste or submit CFK content to generative AI tools for editing, proofreading, rewriting or fact-checking. This restriction protects organizational information and ensures that the work reflects the contractor’s own professional skills and judgment.

Selected candidates will be invited to complete a short editing exercise based on the type of materials reviewed in this role. The exercise is expected to take no more than 30 minutes, is used solely to evaluate editing skills and will not be published or otherwise used by Connecting for Kids.
