  • How To: Trauma-Informed Therapy & Your Family

Trauma-Informed Therapy & Your Family

A school-aged child sits on a concrete structure with her hood up and her hands holding her head.

What is Trauma-Informed Therapy?

Trauma-informed therapy is a skill that centers on trauma history and a person’s needs. Different types of therapists use trauma-informed skills with other therapy techniques. These skills may include:

  • Focusing on safety. Therapists who work from a trauma-informed focus prioritize physical and emotional safety.
  • Collaboration. Trauma-informed therapists work collaboratively and empower people to take a role in their care.
  • Transparency. Trauma-informed therapists are open and honest about treatment.

Some providers may have a certificate in trauma-informed care, but many providers who work with families and children will use trauma-informed methods. When interviewing a provider, it is a good idea to ask how they will use play to help your child.

You can find trauma-informed therapists in our directory by selecting “Child Counseling” (children) or “Caregiver Centered Care” (adults) in the first column. You can also contact one of our Family Resource Specialists for help.
