Do you work outside the home? I am an office manager for a church.

What do you do to relax?
I enjoy reading and watching movies.

What have been your favorite CFK resources? T

The area where I have grown the most... is asking for help. I like to be independent and do things my way, but after my children were both diagnosed, my husband and I felt alone. We didn't know that there were so many others like us out there struggling in silence. Once I asked for help and support from family and friends, it became easier. I love helping others but it has been eye opening to realize that other people like to help ME as much as I like to help THEM.

How has your idea of parenting changed? Sometimes I just have to take each day as it comes, and not compare it to the one before or the one yet to arrive. I take joy in what may seem like a small accomplishment to another parent, but means a big deal in our world. I've learned that even though my child may not be 'typical', I am still a typical parent... good moments and bad moments all mixed together.

The best thing about parenting a child who struggles is... not stressing over petty problems as much. I don't have the time or energy to devote to anything less than important activities for myself and my family. It has brought me closer to my children because I struggled as a child and I know what would have helped me feel better then... and I try to do it now for my kids.

Is there anything else about your journey that you would like to share with other parents? The most important thing to remember is that we are not alone in our struggles and we have an entire army of support in others at CFK if we only reach out and make use of it.

Melissa is the parent of two children.
