Beyond the BenchSM

Connecting for Kids Beyond the BenchBeyond the Bench is Connecting for Kids' unique Buddy Bench training program, designed to help schools teach students the compassion and conflict management skills they need to successfully navigate the adult world.

What is a Buddy Bench?

Buddy Benches were the idea of an eight-year-old Pennsylvania student named Christian and have been used on playgrounds nationwide to help students make connections with their peers. You can read more about Christian's Buddy Benches at buddybench.org or check out this 2013 Scholastic News article to learn more about how Buddy Benches are being used in schools.

Why Do Schools Need Beyond the Bench Training?

Despite the good intentions behind Buddy Benches, many fall short of actually helping children because the supporting culture was not in place. The Connecting for Kids Beyond the Bench Training Program was designed by a pediatric psychologist and teaches students and school staff that there are many reasons why students use a Buddy Bench, including:

  • If you are new to school
  • If you want to make new friends
  • If your friends aren’t here today
  • If you want to play something different than what your friends are playing
  • If you’re having a problem with your friends and you just can’t solve it right now/you want to take a break
  • If you want to be a buddy

This program can help your school to develop students’ conflict resolution skills, celebrate students who act with compassion and remove the stigma of asking for help.
